Can I collect in Pula and return the car in Split?
Yes. Split is the second longest of the one-way drives from Pula, after Dubrovnik, and one of the four cities a Pula hire can end in. Pick Split in the Drop off tab of the form above and the price each car shows is the whole one-way price, its return charge included; the charge is set per car. The Split places in the search are Split airport (SPU) and City delivery, and your voucher gives the return point for your car.
Deposits, card rules and free cancellation are set per car on a one-way booking as on any other.

Search carsWhich motorway runs from Pula to Split?
Split is the far end of a drive that begins on the motorways of Istria: 91 km on the A9 north to Kanfanar and the A8 through the Učka tunnel to Matulji. The A7 and the A6 then take it round Rijeka and 81 km inland to the A1 at Bosiljevo 2.
The A1 carries the rest: 284 km south from Bosiljevo 2, past the Zadar, Benkovac and Šibenik junctions, to the Prgomet exit. From Prgomet the D551 and the D58 lead down towards Trogir, and the D409 runs along the coast past the airport at Kaštela.
On the A1 the route passes eleven tunnels, among them Mala Kapela, 5,760 m and the longest in Croatia, and Sveti Rok, 5,681 m, with Dubrave, 820 m, the last before Prgomet. It crosses the Gacka and Maslenica bridges and the Krka bridge, 391.16 m, on the Skradin to Šibenik section. Before the A1, the A7 round Rijeka has four tunnels and the A6 twelve.
In bora conditions the section from Sveti Rok to Posedarje has been shut to all traffic, as on 15 November 2024 and 6 April 2025; HAK’s road report on 072 777 777 gives the day’s state of the road before you set off.

How much are the tolls from Pula to Split?
An ordinary car pays class I, and tolls are the renter’s (clause 12): 12.10 EUR to Bina Istra for the Istrian Y, from the Pula plaza to Matulji through the Učka tunnel, and 25.50 EUR to HAC from the Rijeka (Grobnik) plaza on the A6 to the Prgomet plaza, the exit for Split Airport. Until the barrier-free Crolibertas system applies in full, planned from 1 March 2027, both work by ticket: pay at the exit in cash or by card. A van over 1.90 m high or a car towing a trailer is class II and pays more.
| Operator | Plazas | Class I |
|---|---|---|
| Bina Istra (Istrian Y) | Pula to Matulji, through the Učka tunnel | 12.10 EUR |
| HAC (A6 and A1) | Rijeka (Grobnik) to Prgomet | 25.50 EUR |
Where can I stop for fuel between Pula and Split?
Seven service areas with fuel lie between the airport and Bosiljevo 2, the last of them Kupjak on the A6, with food and rooms as well. On the A1 south the carriageway towards Split has fuel at Dobra, Sokolac, Janjče, Zir, Jasenice, Nadin, Prokljan and Vrpolje Primorsko, 19 km before Prgomet. Krka has EV charging and food, Modruš, Jezerane and Lički Osik are shop and parking stops, and several others are parking only.
The car goes back with the fuel it left with (clause 3), so Vrpolje Primorsko is the last motorway fuel stop before the return.
Where is Split Airport, and where is the car returned?
Split Airport is in Kaštela, at the Trogir end of the town, at Cesta dr. Franje Tuđmana 1270, Kaštel Štafilić, 20 km from Split and 6 km from Trogir. Several rental companies operate there, with three rent-a-car points by the South car park, next to the parking payment machines, and your rental voucher names the return point for your car.
Can I drive into Split and park near the old town?
Diocletian’s Palace lies inside Zone A, the protected historic centre, whose pedestrian streets and squares are kept for pedestrians, service and emergency vehicles, so park outside the old town and walk in. Street parking runs in four zones, paid at the machines or in the Split Parking app.
For Hvar, the Split to Stari Grad car ferry sells vehicle tickets that are also a reservation for the chosen departure, and a vehicle ticket needs the car’s registration document. Taking a rental car on a ferry between the islands and the mainland also needs prior arrangement with customer support before the booking is completed (clause 10).

What do I need to collect the car at Pula Airport?
To collect the car at Pula Airport you need a national licence with Latin-script details that stays valid to the last day of the rental, and, where the car asks for one, a physical embossed credit card in the main driver’s name (clauses 14 and 16). Rental days are charged in 24-hour blocks, the car returns with the fuel it left with, and some companies hold the deposit for 30 to 45 days (clauses 1, 3 and 17). Car hire insurance and deposits work on a Split one-way as on any Pula hire: standard cover leaves out the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen and the interior (clause 5).
